The beginner's kit · UK gold panning
You do not need a fortune in gear to pan gold from a British river — location and technique matter far more. This is the exact starter kit we recommend, kept dead simple: buy the ready-made bundle, or build your own in three tiers.
As an Amazon Associate, UK Gold Prospector earns from qualifying purchases — at no extra cost to you. See our full equipment guide for the detailed reasoning.
Pan · classifier · snuffer — most of the work, right there
The shortcut
For nine out of ten people starting out, a complete starter kit beats buying separate pieces — it is the cheapest way in per item, and there is nothing in it you will outgrow in your first season.
Ready-made · everything in one box
We'd point beginners at the Garrett gold panning starter kit: two pans, a classifier sieve, a snuffer bottle and sample vials — every tool you need to find, recover and store gold from a UK river, for one modest one-off price. Get it to the water, then add specialist gear only once you know what you actually reach for.
Or build your own
Prefer to choose each piece? Start at Tier 1 and stop wherever you like — every tier finds gold. Pans and classifiers come from UK specialist Regton (10% off with code UKGP); the rest from Amazon.
The bare minimum
The three tools that will actually recover gold from a British burn — nothing wasted.
What we'd put in a beginner's bag
Tier 1 plus the tools that quietly make the difference between finding gold and losing it.
Get in the water properly
Add the comfort and safety kit for full days in cold upland rivers. Optional at first — wellies will do.

Where to buy
Regton — pans, classifiers & UK specialist advice. A long-established British prospecting retailer and our recommended source for pans and classifiers, from people who actually know the kit. Regton readers get 10% off with code UKGP.
Gold Magnet UK — British-made sluices. When you are ready to scale up, Gold Magnet UK makes sluice boxes and fine-gold recovery kit here in Britain — 10% off with code GOLD10.
Amazon — for the basics. The fastest, usually cheapest way to get a complete starter kit plus the odds and ends delivered quickly.
Don't waste money on the wrong thing first. The most common beginner mistake is buying a sluice box or metal detector before mastering the pan. UK gold is overwhelmingly fine flake — a detector rarely registers it, and a sluice only earns its keep once you can read the water. Learn the pan first, then scale up.
